DOMAINE COMBIER : A NATURE STORY
THE 1970s

A pioneer of organic farming in France, Maurice Combier has always followed his convictions, even if he was sometimes considered as a fool. As of 1970, while viticulture discovered the "benefits" of technical progress, productivism and clones, he continued to advocate manual work and hard work on the land. During all the years at the head of the estate, his priority for the respect of the environment and the quality of its fruits will give him a head start to become an example in the Rhone Valley.

50 YEARS OF ORGANIC FARMING

At the end of the 1960s, Maurice Combier had an allergic reaction to a phyto-sanitary product. An anecdote that will guide all his future farming life. He asked himself questions, heard one day speak of "living soil". In the winter of 1969-1970, he dived into the deep and converted the property into organic farming, a concept at the time in its infancy. Regardless, he cultivates his land as an autodidact, undergoes difficult years (frost in 1975, drought in 1976) but persists. Every mistake made is a new lesson. Forerunner and visionary, after half a century of organic farming, Domaine Combier continues to maintain family know-how from generation to generation.

The arrival of the younger generations has favored, over the years, the extension of the property on viticulture to the detriment of the arboriculture which represents only 5 hectares of apricot trees ... Since 1990, Laurent continues the work carried out by his father, David and Julien ask themselves questions to improve their practices. All the plantations and replantings are in massal selection to preserve the typicity of the grape varieties. It's all about balance and precision. Each intervention in the vineyard is adjusted as closely as possible according to the character of the soil, the lunar calendar and the life of the plant. Nature governs each gesture and not the other way around.
